The Armitt Museum and Library is a compact, thoughtful museum on the northern edge of Ambleside. Its collections cover Lake District writers, artists, natural history, and local life, with Beatrix Potter represented as more than the creator of rabbits in waistcoats.
This is a good wet-weather stop and a useful corrective to the more commercial Potter attractions elsewhere around Windermere. Give it an hour, longer if you like manuscripts, watercolours, and the quieter intellectual history of the Lakes.
