Many guidebooks have been written for walking in the Lake District but none is better known than the series by Alfred Wainwright. Each book takes a particular part of the Lake District and describes routes up every mountain in it. There are brilliant sketch maps and every detail where you might go wrong is described and often sketched. Seven books cover the main fells and he added a guide to the Outlying Fells in old age. There are also five Lakeland Sketchbooks.
Wainwright died in 1991 and his ashes were scattered on Haystacks, a favourite mountain. As a result it has lost some of the unspoilt character that endeared it to him, but it is still a wonderful place accessible with surprising ease from Honister Pass.
