High Stile

Dramatic ridge walk above Buttermere with big views

High Stile (806m) is the highest point on the long ridge running along the south side of Buttermere. The views north over the lake and across to the Grasmoor fells are among the best in the western Lakes.

The eastern approach from Scarth Gap is steep and stony. A far better ascent goes up Sheepbone Rake on the north face of High Crag, or along the north-east ridge of High Stile itself. Most walkers continue westward over Red Pike and descend via Bleaberry Tarn or, more rewardingly, past Scale Force — the highest waterfall in the Lake District at around 52 metres. Allow five to six hours for the full Buttermere horseshoe circuit.
