For drinking, The Hole in t' Wall in Bowness is the historic pub of choice — 17th-century low beams, real ale and a stone-flagged courtyard. The Royal Oak in Bowness is the bigger, busier alternative with a wide beer selection and food until late. Up in Windermere town, The Crafty Baa is a craft-beer specialist with a long rotating tap list and decent small plates.
For coffee and cake, Lazy Daisy's on Crescent Road in Windermere does proper espresso and homemade lemon drizzle; Poppi Red in Bowness has a more pink-and-floral feel and is much-loved by locals. The patisserie at Linthwaite House does an excellent afternoon tea if you want to make an occasion of it, with views over the lake from the terrace.
