Brixton Village and the adjoining Market Row are covered Edwardian arcades that have become one of the best places to eat in south London. Once half-empty, the lanes filled in the 2010s with a dense run of small independent restaurants, cafés, and food counters — Caribbean, West African, Mexican, Thai, Italian, and more — squeezed in among grocers, fishmongers, and stalls selling fabric and records.
The result is a buzzing, low-ceilinged warren that is busiest in the evenings and at weekends, when tables spill into the walkways. Most places are small, many do not take bookings, and turnover keeps the line-up fresh. Come hungry, wander until something appeals, and eat your way around — it is the heart of Brixton's food scene and a direct expression of the area's Afro-Caribbean roots.
