Gymkhana is one of the finest Indian restaurants in London — a Mayfair room designed to evoke the colonial-era members' clubs of Bombay and Delhi, with mahogany panels, hunting trophies, rattan furniture, and cooking of real sophistication. The menu draws on aristocratic Mughal traditions and colonial-era Indian cooking that rarely appears outside private homes.

The kid goat methi keema, the wild muntjac biryani, and the dum pukht dishes are the things to order. The cocktail list, heavy with Indian botanicals, is excellent. Book well ahead for dinner; the lunch set menu is better value.
