Tate Britain

National collection of British art from 1500 to now, including the Turner bequest

Tate Britain, on the riverside at Millbank, holds the national collection of British art from the Tudors to the present day — the older and quieter sibling of Tate Modern downstream. Its great strength is the Turner bequest, the largest collection of J.M.W. Turner's work anywhere, displayed in the dedicated Clore Gallery, alongside Constable, Gainsborough, Blake, the Pre-Raphaelites, and modern and contemporary British artists.

The grand Edwardian building is a pleasure in itself, and the chronological "Walk Through British Art" makes it easy to trace five centuries in an afternoon. Entry to the permanent collection is free; major temporary exhibitions are ticketed, including the annual Turner Prize. A short walk south of Parliament, it is the cultural anchor at the quieter end of Westminster.
