Things to Do

Durham's compact historic centre, raised on a wooded peninsula above the River Wear, packs a remarkable amount into a small area: a Norman cathedral and castle that share one of the finest medieval settings in Europe, England's third oldest university, two medieval bridges, a river walk, and a clutch of excellent small museums. Most of it is walkable from the train station in under ten minutes.
