Andy Capp Statue

Bronze statue of the cartoon Hartlepudlian by the marina

Reg Smythe's Andy Capp first appeared in the Daily Mirror in 1957 — flat cap, fag in mouth, perpetually on his way to or from the pub. Smythe was a Hartlepool man and based the character on the working-class men he grew up with. The bronze statue stands by the marina, cap pulled down, hands in pockets.

It's a five-minute stop on the way between the marina and the Royal Navy Museum — and a useful corrective to the assumption that civic statues all have to commemorate the worthy.
