Cragside is one of Northumberland's great houses, built for engineer and industrialist William Armstrong and famous for its technical imagination as much as its architecture. The house was an early adopter of hydroelectric power, and the estate still feels like a Victorian experiment in comfort, landscape, and invention.
The interiors are rich, but the wider estate is just as important: wooded drives, lakes, rock gardens, and views that show how carefully the landscape was shaped. From Alnwick it is a substantial but very worthwhile excursion, especially for travelers interested in the meeting point of engineering and country-house ambition.
