The Tyne and Wear Metro is the most useful form of transport in Sunderland. The main Metro line runs from the city centre north along the coast to Seaburn and Roker (useful for the beaches), and the University station serves the north bank arts cluster. A single fare in the city zone is inexpensive, and day passes cover unlimited travel across the network.
The city centre is compact and walkable. The north bank — National Glass Centre, St Peter's Church, Northern Gallery — can be reached on foot from the centre via the Wearmouth Bridge in about twenty minutes. For outlying sights like Hylton Castle and Ryhope Engines Museum, a bus or taxi is necessary.
