Washington F Pit Museum

Washington F Pit Museum preserves part of the coal-mining landscape that once defined this stretch of County Durham and Wearside. The surviving winding engine and pit buildings tell a compact story of deep shafts, steam power, flooding, explosions, and the hard engineering needed to work the Durham coal seams.

Opening arrangements have historically been irregular, so check before travelling. If it is open, it pairs well with Washington Old Hall or the industrial sights around Sunderland.
