Carlisle is well connected by rail. It sits on the West Coast Main Line, putting it around 3 hours 20 minutes from London Euston, and services run regularly throughout the day. It is also the northern terminus of the Settle-Carlisle Railway, which runs south through the Yorkshire Dales — one of the most scenic rail routes in England — and connects to Leeds and beyond.
By road, the M6 motorway passes close to the city, making it straightforward to reach from Manchester, the Midlands, or Scotland. The A74(M) continues north into Scotland.
Carlisle Lake District Airport, about 5 miles northeast of the city, handles limited domestic flights, but most visitors fly into Manchester or Glasgow and travel by train or car.
