Guildhall Museum

Small medieval guildhall museum tucked into Carlisle city centre.

The Guildhall Museum occupies one of Carlisle's most atmospheric surviving civic buildings, a timber-framed guildhall whose upper rooms feel very different from the stone castle and cathedral nearby. It is small, but the building itself gives the visit its value.

Inside, the displays focus on Carlisle's old trades and city life, the sort of local history that makes the centre easier to read as you walk around it. It works best as a short stop while exploring the old streets rather than as a major museum outing.
