Clitheroe's pleasures are unhurried. The castle on its limestone crag, the market square below it, the Ribble Valley opening out to the north — this is a town for walking and looking rather than ticking boxes. Pendle Hill looms over everything and rewards a half-day climb with views across Lancashire and into Yorkshire.
