Roman Bathhouse

Well-preserved Roman military bathhouse below street level

A small but well-preserved Roman bathhouse, tucked below street level off Church Street. It dates from around the 1st to 4th centuries AD, when Lancaster was the Roman fort of Longovicium (or possibly Calunium — historians disagree). The remains include the hypocaust underfloor heating system. It's easy to walk past without noticing — look for the railings near the car park on Vicarage Fields.

A story
The bathhouse was discovered in 1973 during building work and is one of the best-preserved Roman military bathhouses in Britain. Lancaster's Roman fort, Galava, garrisoned troops here from around AD 90.
