Lancaster's history is compact and walkable. The castle and the old quarter around it reward a couple of hours on foot, and the Roman bathhouse is easy to miss if you don't know to look. For views over the city and bay, the Ashton Memorial in Williamson Park is an easy uphill walk from the centre. Down on the quay, the Maritime Museum addresses Lancaster's 18th-century slave-trading history with unusual directness.
