The River Lune runs through Lancaster and into Morecambe Bay, and the valley upstream of the city is excellent cycling and walking country. The Lune Cycleway follows the river from Lancaster inland through farmland and woodland toward Kirkby Lonsdale, roughly 14 miles away — a manageable day ride on a flat-to-gentle route with good scenery throughout.
Turner painted the valley in the early 19th century and his view from Crook of Lune (a few miles east of the city) has been described as one of the finest landscapes in England. The walk from Lancaster to Crook of Lune and back takes about three hours. The Lune Millennium Bridge, a cable-stayed footbridge just west of the city centre, is the best starting point — cross it and pick up the riverside path heading east.
The valley is best in spring and autumn. Kirkby Lonsdale is a pleasant market town if you want a destination at the far end.
