Dean Incent's House

Fifteenth-century timber-framed townhouse opposite St Peter's

Almost opposite the parish church, Dean Incent's House is a fifteenth-century timber-framed building that was once owned by John Incent, the Dean of St Paul's who endowed Berkhamsted's grammar school in 1541. The over-jettied first floor and exposed timber framing are unusual survivals on a high-traffic English high street; most of Berkhamsted's other medieval buildings were lost to Georgian re-fronting or Victorian redevelopment.

The interior is open to visitors during summer afternoons by the local Civic Society; otherwise admire it from the pavement. The house is a useful reminder that Berkhamsted's High Street is the line of an old Roman road, and that some of these timber buildings have stood here for longer than the United Kingdom has existed.
