Pitstone Windmill

Weathered timber windmill on the Chiltern edge near Berkhamsted

Pitstone Windmill is a small, weathered timber windmill standing in open countryside on the edge of the Chilterns. Parts of the structure are very old, and the mill has the pleasingly fragile look of a rural building that has survived because enough people cared about it at the right moments.

It is a quiet stop rather than a blockbuster sight, best combined with a walk on the Ashridge Estate or a wider Chilterns day out from Berkhamsted. When open, the interior gives a close look at the machinery and the practical work of milling grain; when closed, the silhouette against the fields is still worth the detour.
