Bars and Cafes

Canterbury has two universities and a strong pub tradition, which is the explanation for almost everything that follows. The Foundry Brew Pub on White Horse Lane is the most reliable for craft beer — they brew on the premises and the kitchen is solid. The Old Buttermarket by the cathedral gates is the touristy choice but the building is genuinely seventeenth-century and the beer is fine.

For something quieter, The Thomas Becket on Best Lane is a proper Kentish pub with a fire in winter and a beer garden out the back. The medieval Parrot in St Radigund's pulls a strong pint. Student bars cluster around St Peter's Place near Westgate Hall — usually loud, usually cheap.

For coffee, The Refectory Kitchen in the cathedral precincts is the dependable choice; Boho Cafe on the High Street is the day-and-night student favourite for breakfasts, cake, and people-watching.
