Punting on the Stour

Half-hour punt trips along the river through the old town

Two competing operators run guided punt trips from the bridge at the bottom of the High Street and from the King's Mill on the opposite side of town. Trips last about 40 minutes and float you slowly past the city walls, the medieval Eastbridge Hospital, Greyfriars Chapel, and the gardens of the King's School. The punter does the work and supplies a running commentary that is usually a mixture of accurate history and gentle local jokes.

It is the best way to see the parts of Canterbury that the medieval pilgrims would not have — the river runs at the back of the High Street and reveals the city's other, quieter face. Book ahead in summer; tickets are cheap by the standards of British river boats.
