Triple spiral military stairway in Dover's Western Heights

The Grand Shaft is one of Dover's strangest military-engineering sights: a triple spiral staircase cut through the cliff to connect the Western Heights fortifications with the lower town. It was designed to move troops quickly between the barracks above and the harbour below.

Open access can be limited, so check current visiting arrangements before building a day around it. When available, it adds a memorable counterpoint to Dover Castle and the White Cliffs, showing the town's layered defensive history from another angle.
