Shipwreck Museum

The Shipwreck Museum in Hastings Old Town holds artefacts from ships wrecked along the East Sussex and Kent coast, from the Goodwin Sands to Pevensey Bay. The centrepiece of the collection is material from the Amsterdam, a Dutch East India Company ship that ran aground at Bulverhythe in 1749 and was remarkably well-preserved in the seabed. At very low tides, the wreck is still partially visible on the beach.

The museum also covers other significant wrecks in the region, including the warship Anne (1690). The displays are detailed and historically substantial — this is a serious maritime museum rather than a tourist attraction dressed up with old rope. It occupies a historic building in the Old Town and is modest in scale but excellent in content.
