The Ramsgate Tunnels are a network of 6.5 kilometres of air-raid shelters cut through the chalk beneath the town during 1939–40, capable of sheltering up to 60,000 people — virtually the entire population at the time. The tunnels are open for guided tours and are one of the best-preserved examples of World War II civilian infrastructure in England.
Tours depart from the entrance on Westcliff Hall and cover a substantial section of the tunnel network, passing through the original emergency hospital, the wartime canteen, the communications room, and the dormitory areas. The lighting and sound design is thoughtful without being overwrought. Allow about 90 minutes. Tours run at weekends throughout the year and daily in summer; booking is strongly advised. The tunnels are cool (around 10°C) regardless of outside temperature, so bring a layer.
