The Watford Hornet

Large painted-fibreglass hornet sculpture celebrating Watford FC's nickname

A wedge-shaped painted hornet, head down and stinger up, mounted on a steel column at the north end of the High Street near the Harlequin Shopping Centre. It is one of half a dozen public-art sculptures dotted around the centre and is the only one most visitors photograph.

The hornet is a nod to Watford FC, whose nickname is "the Hornets" and whose grounds are at Vicarage Road a short walk south. Easy to miss if you don't look up — the head is about four metres off the pavement.

A story
Watford FC's traditional nickname is "the Hornets" — a name that goes back to the team's first proper kit in 1909, when they switched from old gold shirts to the yellow-and-black hooped strip that earned the comparison. The hornet has been the club crest in some form ever since.
