High Moorland Visitor Centre

The High Moorland Visitor Centre is the main information point for Dartmoor National Park, housed in a former dairy in the centre of Princetown. It holds exhibitions on the geology, history, and wildlife of the moor, with particular emphasis on the Bronze Age settlements — Dartmoor has one of the highest concentrations of prehistoric monuments in Europe, including stone rows, stone circles, and hundreds of pounds (enclosures) built by farming communities four thousand years ago.

The centre's staff are good sources of walking advice. Walks from Princetown are varied and consistently rewarding: north toward Wistman's Wood (an ancient dwarf oak woodland growing among boulders), east toward the great granite tors, or south along the remains of the old Princetown Railway. The moor weather changes fast — go prepared for fog and cold even in summer.
