The Dartmouth Inn

The Dartmouth Inn is a centuries-old coaching inn on East Street, now one of the better gastropubs in Newton Abbot. The kitchen does reliable Devon pub food — beer-battered fish and chips, slow-cooked lamb shoulder, a Sunday roast that fills out the dining room — and the cask ales are well kept.

It is the kind of place locals go to for a long lunch or a quiet evening. The building has uneven floors and low beams, a small log fire in winter, and a courtyard garden out the back for summer. Reservations are sensible on Friday and Saturday evenings.
