Severn Ham

Severn Ham is a large area of flood meadow between the Severn and the town, designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest for its unimproved grassland habitat. The meadows flood regularly in winter and spring, creating a temporary wetland that attracts wildfowl and wading birds in numbers that can be impressive after heavy rain.

In summer the Ham is a popular spot for dog walkers and cricket — the Swilgate cricket ground uses part of the meadow — and the riverside path along its edge gives one of the best views of Tewkesbury Abbey from the water. The path connects to the broader network of riverside walks along both the Severn and the Avon.
