St John's Church

Grade I listed Victorian church with William Morris stained glass

A Grade I listed Anglican church on Montpellier Road, just up the hill from the harbour. The building was designed by George Edmund Street in the High Victorian Gothic style and consecrated in 1871. What sets it apart is the interior: several windows are by Edward Burne-Jones and made by William Morris's firm, including the great east window. The reredos is by G. F. Bodley.

Easily missed from the outside — the church is squeezed between hotels and apartments — but worth a few minutes inside for the stained glass alone.
