Torquay sits in the warmest pocket of mainland Britain, with average summer maxima around 21°C and very mild winters thanks to the Gulf Stream. Palm trees and bananas grow happily on the seafront and proper frost is rare. July and August are the busiest months — hotels fill, beaches get crowded, and prices are highest. The town is at its prettiest in late May and June, when the weather is reliably good but the school-holiday rush has not started.
September is the quiet sweet spot: the sea is at its warmest, the cafes are still open, and the seafront empties out. Winter is mild but most attractions close — fine for a coastal walk and a pub lunch, less so for a beach holiday. The annual Torbay Royal Regatta in late August is the biggest event, with fireworks over the bay and a Red Arrows display.
