Watchet Boat Museum

The Watchet Boat Museum, in a converted goods shed near the railway station, is dedicated to the flatner — a flat-bottomed working boat developed locally in the 19th century for moving cargo across the Bridgwater Bay mudflats and up the Parrett estuary. The collection includes several restored vessels along with the tools, photographs and oral histories of the men who built and sailed them.

It is a very specific museum about a very specific boat, but it is well done. The volunteers usually include a couple of former flatner builders or sailors, and the explanations are unhurried. Open weekends and bank holidays in season. Allow 30–45 minutes.
