West Somerset Railway

Watchet is the second-busiest stop on the West Somerset Railway, the longest heritage steam line in England. Trains run from Bishops Lydeard, near Taunton, along the edge of the Quantocks and out along the coast to Minehead — Watchet sits at roughly the halfway point and the station is a few minutes' walk from the harbour.

The line runs daily in summer and on selected days in winter, with a mix of steam and heritage diesel traction. A return ticket from Watchet to Minehead is the easiest way to ride a short stretch and combine it with a walk along the seafront at the other end. Special-event days (1940s weekends, beer festivals, the Santa specials) are worth checking ahead.

A story
The West Somerset Railway is the longest standard-gauge heritage line in England — 22.75 miles from Bishops Lydeard to Minehead, almost all of which was lifted by British Rail in 1971 before volunteers bought back the track and put steam locomotives back on it within five years.
