Getting There

Wells has no railway station — the line was closed in 1963 — and arriving by car is the easiest option for most visitors. There is a large car park at Princes Road off the A39, a five-minute walk from the cathedral. The drive from Bristol takes around 35 minutes; from Bath, about 30 minutes via the A39 through Shepton Mallet.

Buses run from Bristol Bus Station (First Bus route 376) roughly every hour, taking around 75 minutes. From Bath, change at Bristol or take a less frequent direct service via Shepton Mallet. The Cheddar Valley railway path, a long-distance cycling route, passes close to Wells and makes for a scenic arrival on two wheels if you are cycling the area.

Wells is a natural hub for exploring the Somerset Levels, the Mendip Hills, and the tourist draw of Glastonbury to the south. For accommodation, the town is small enough that most places to stay are within easy walking distance of the cathedral.
