Tarr Steps is the finest clapper bridge in England — a medieval pedestrian crossing of huge flat stones laid on piers of stacked slabs, spanning the River Barle in a wooded valley four miles southwest of Winsford. The bridge has been swept away and reassembled many times over the centuries, most recently after floods in 2012 and 2016.
The setting is the equal of the bridge itself: a deep oak woodland, the river running clear and fast over a stony bed, dippers and grey wagtails working the riffles. The riverbank walks in both directions are excellent. A small pub-restaurant on the south bank serves cream teas and Exmoor ales.
