Calderdale

Metropolitan borough around Halifax, known for Calder Valley mill towns and the 18th-century Piece Hall.

Calderdale is the metropolitan borough centred on Halifax in West Yorkshire, stretching along the Calder Valley from the Pennine hills down to Brighouse. It is one of the more scenic parts of post-industrial Yorkshire, with steep-sided valleys, millstone grit towns, and surprisingly good walking.

The star attraction in Halifax is the Piece Hall, a magnificent 18th-century cloth hall built around a huge courtyard — the only surviving example of its kind in Britain. The "pieces" were lengths of wool brought here for sale, and the building now houses independent shops, a gallery, and regular markets in the courtyard. The Eureka National Children's Museum is excellent for families, though not cheap.

Hebden Bridge, further up the valley, has reinvented itself as an artsy, alternative town popular with walkers and weekenders from Leeds and Manchester. Todmorden, at the far end, is covered under South Pennines.
