Danum Gallery, Library and Museum

Doncaster's main museum, with Roman finds from the fort of Danum and natural history collections

The Danum Gallery, Library and Museum is Doncaster's main cultural venue, opened in 2021 in a purpose-built building in the town centre. The collection covers the full range of local history from the Roman fort of Danum (the origin of the town's name) through the medieval market town to the industrial period.

The Roman gallery is the highlight: Doncaster was a significant fort on the Roman road network, and the finds include carved stonework, military equipment, and everyday objects that give a vivid picture of garrison life on the northern frontier. The natural history collections are also strong, with Yorkshire fossils and wildlife. Entry to the permanent collection is free.
