Helmsley Castle gives the town its weight. The ruins show a long life: Norman fortress, Tudor mansion, Civil War stronghold, and later romantic ruin in the landscape of the Duncombe estate.
It is close enough to the market square to visit without planning, but worth more than a quick look. The surviving earthworks, walls, and domestic ranges make it easy to read the castle's change from military power to country-house display.
