Five-Rise Locks

The Five-Rise Locks at Bingley are the showpiece of the Leeds and Liverpool Canal: five linked chambers lifting narrowboats up the hillside in one steep sequence. Opened in 1774, the Grade I-listed staircase is still an impressive bit of working engineering, especially when a boat is passing through and the lock-keepers are managing the water by hand.
