Pickering Castle is a Norman fortress above the town, first built in timber and later rebuilt in stone in the 12th century. It escaped the worst of later wars, so the earthworks, curtain walls, towers, and chapel ruins still give a clear sense of the medieval layout.
It pairs naturally with the North Yorkshire Moors Railway station below. Allow time to walk the walls and look back across Pickering before heading into the moors.
