Great Whernside is the higher neighbour of Buckden Pike, edging it by a couple of metres and giving a more open moorland walk above Kettlewell. It is a good choice when you want a longer day and the tops are clear.
The name comes from old words linked to quern stones, and the millstone grit underfoot explains why. Do not confuse it with Whernside above Ribblehead, one of Yorkshire's Three Peaks.
