Arran

Accessible Scottish island of rugged mountains, sandy bays, and ferry-linked villages around Goat Fell.

Arran is often called "Scotland in Miniature" — the northern half is rugged mountain country dominated by Goat Fell (874m), while the southern half is rolling farmland and sandy bays. It is one of the most accessible Scottish islands, reached by a short CalMac ferry from Ardrossan on the Ayrshire coast.

The main town is Brodick, where the ferry arrives, with Brodick Castle (National Trust for Scotland) set against the mountain backdrop. Lochranza in the north has a ruined castle and the Arran Distillery. Whiting Bay on the southeast coast is a quieter base. The island is small enough to drive around in a day, but the walking — particularly the ridge traverse of the northern mountains — is what makes it worth staying longer.
