Duffus Castle

Ruined motte-and-bailey castle near Elgin, with atmospheric stonework slipping into its mound.

Duffus Castle is a fine ruin for travellers based in Elgin, especially if you like castles that still show their bones. The stone keep slumps into the old motte, making the structure feel more dramatic than its lowland setting first suggests.

It is an open-air visit and usually a short one, but the atmosphere is strong: grass, stone, sky, and the visible failure of medieval engineering over soft ground. Pair it with Spynie Palace or Elgin Cathedral for a fuller Moray history day.
