Once called the "Lantern of the North," Elgin Cathedral was among the grandest in medieval Scotland before the Wolf of Badenoch torched it in 1390 in revenge for his excommunication. The ruins that remain — managed by Historic Environment Scotland — are still impressively substantial: twin western towers, intricate carved stonework, and a large Pictish symbol stone displayed in the nave. Climb the tower for views over the town and the surrounding Moray countryside.
