The Foyers hydro scheme on the loch shore has the unusual claim of being the first commercial hydroelectric station in Britain — opened in 1896 to power an aluminium smelter, the works pulled water from the River Foyers and dropped it through turbines on the loch. The smelter is long closed; today's plant is a pumped-storage scheme, using off-peak grid electricity to pump water up to Loch Mhòr and releasing it back through the turbines at peak demand.
The site itself is not open to the public, but information boards on the path between the upper and lower villages explain the history, and the views down across the works toward the loch are worth a brief detour.
