Loch of Strathbeg is one of northeast Scotland's serious birding sites, a shallow coastal loch with hides, wetlands, and big seasonal movements of geese and ducks. It gives Fraserburgh a nature stop that is very different from its harbour and beach-side sights.
The reserve is best if you bring binoculars and a little patience. Winter and migration periods are strongest for birds, but even outside peak season the open water, reedbeds, and big skies make it a worthwhile drive from town.
