Badbea

Badbea is a ruined Clearance village on the cliff slopes north of Helmsdale, reached by a short walk from the A9. Families evicted from more fertile inland straths were settled here from the late 18th century, on poor exposed ground where the wind and sea cliffs were constant facts of life.

The remains are modest: low stone walls, house footings and a memorial rather than a restored village. That sparseness is part of the force of the place. Visit in decent weather, wear shoes that can handle wet grass, and allow time to read the information panels rather than treating it as a quick roadside stop.
