Emigrants Statue

The Emigrants Statue stands in Couper Park above the River Helmsdale, looking over the village and harbour. It commemorates Highlanders who left Scotland during and after the Clearances, with a family group facing outward toward the sea.

The monument is not subtle, but it works because Helmsdale's own story is tied so closely to forced resettlement and departure. Walk up from either bridge over the river; the view back over the grid-plan village helps explain why this spot was chosen.
