Arinagour

Arinagour is the only village on Coll and where the CalMac ferry from Oban ties up. A single street of white-painted cottages curls around the bay, with the small Coll Hotel at one end and the pier at the other. Most of the island's 150 or so residents live here or in the surrounding crofts.

The village has the practical things you need: a small shop and post office, the hotel bar, a community centre, the Island Cafe, and a petrol pump that operates on an honour system. There is no ATM and no mobile signal in patches, so come prepared. The harbour is sheltered enough that yachts use it as an anchorage on the run between Mull and the Outer Hebrides.

A story
Arinagour means 'shieling of the goats' in Gaelic. The double row of whitewashed cottages was laid out by the Stewart lairds in the 1830s during the Clearances, when the population was forcibly moved off the better farmland.
