Feall Bay and Crossapol Beach

Coll's south-western shoreline is one long sequence of empty white-sand beaches, the most photogenic of which are Feall Bay and the adjoining Crossapol Beach, separated by a high sand-dune ridge. Walk over the dunes from Breachacha and you drop down on to a mile-long arc of shell sand with no buildings in sight.

The water is bracingly cold but glassy clear on calm days, and the sand squeaks underfoot in the way that only very pure shell sand does. It is rare to share a beach this size with more than a handful of people, even in August. Bring boots — the walk across the dunes is steeper and softer than it looks.

A story
The dunes behind Feall Bay are some of the highest in the Hebrides, rising to about 100 metres. The constant wind has built and rebuilt them for thousands of years, and the deep sand traps freshwater into a system of small lochans that draw migrating geese in October.
